Registration for eligible case managers will soon be opening on a phased basis. We understand there has been a lot of information circulated, and we have tried to include the key elements within this communication.
What is the phased basis?
In order to ensure the registration process works effectively and efficiently, we will open registration on a phased basis.
Initially registration will open to case managers with 15 years or more experience and IRCM Registration and Conduct Panel Members (so they can support our appeals process). Once these applications are processed, we will continue with a phased opening based on years of experience.

Why should I register?
Being a Registered Case Manager informs the public and others that you work with such as employers and commissioners that you are committed to safeguarding people who use case management services, will abide by the Standards of Proficiency for Case Managers and that you are subject to a review process if concerns arise. As an independent register of case managers, IRCM is focused on ensuring that case managers provide services safely, effectively and consistently, in the interests of protecting the public.
Becoming a Registered Case Manager complements other professional registrations and memberships. Some case managers enter case management after qualifying in another regulated profession and often choose to maintain their registration even though this is not specific to case management. Membership organisations such as BABICM, CMSUK, and VRA (CMMOs) support professional practice, development of competency and highlight and lobby on issues relevant to their members.
How much does it cost?
Initially registration will be open only to eligible members of BABICM, CMSUK and VRA when they register before a set deadline (TBC), registration will be free for their first year.
Once we have completed our phasing a date will be set for registration to be opened to those who are not members of the CMMOs and a registration fee will be set. We are mindful that many case managers hold multiple registrations and will keep costs as low as possible.
Can I register? Am I eligible?
You will need to be or have been a case manager or case manager in training. You may now be working within case management in another role, but no longer delivering case management services e.g., as a supervisor, manager researcher, consultant and/or teacher.
For more information about our eligibility criteria, the hours of experience required and IRCM definitions of Case Manager and Case Manager in Training, refer to the Registration and Renewal Policy.
How will registration work?
When registration is open to you, you will be able to register online.
- Once we receive your application it will be assessed.
- If registration is approved, you will be added to the register.
- If registration is rejected, we will provide feedback setting out the reasons for rejection and your right of appeal.
What is the Certificate of Proficiency in Case Management?
- We are developing a Certificate of Proficiency that will become a requirement for Registered Case Managers.
- This will be a standardised assessment of skills, knowledge and abilities required to be a competent case manager. The test will be primarily case study based, with multiple choice questions.
- If you register before the Certificate of Proficiency in Case Management is launched, you will need to pass this within 6 months of it being published to maintain your registration
- If you register after the launch of the Certificate of Proficiency in Case Management, you will need to complete this prior to being added to the register.
- The certificate will be completed online in exam conditions.
