As we observe Mental Health Awareness Week, The Institute of Registered Case Managers (IRCM) want to take the opportunity to recognise those Case Managers specialising in mental health care. We also want to remind our Case Managers of the importance of supervision for maintaining your own well-being as well as enhancing client outcomes.

According to our 2023 Survey 15% of Case Managers surveyed specialise in mental health. Their expertise is more vital than ever in light of UK statistics:

1 in 4 people in England will experience a mental health problem each year, with 1 in 6 reporting common mental health issues like anxiety and depression weekly (Home).

1.86 million people were in contact with mental health services as of November 2023 (NHS England Digital).

Approximately 43% of unemployed individuals reported poor mental health (Health Foundation)

As well as assisting clients to receive support for their mental health and wellbeing needs, Case Managers should be taking care of their own wellbeing. Supervision is one integral way for Case Managers to address this need. This is not just a requirement of The Institute of Registered Case Managers—it’s a cornerstone of best practice. It ensures:

Feedback and Support: Supervision provides an environment to discuss challenges and celebrate successes.

Quality Care: Supervision leads to enhanced decision-making that directly improves client outcomes.
